The Health Risk Hiding in Your Cleaning Supplies

When we purchase cleaning supplies we expect them to do one thing: CLEAN!  We purchase things to clean our clothes, dishes, floors, windows, bathrooms, kitchens, carpets, and so much more.  We buy them in a variety of scents so when we are done our house smells like we have been cleaning.  While the chemicals in our cleaners, bleach, soft scrubs, etc are meant to kill the germs and leave our countertops, bathrooms, and kitchens sparkling clean, they are also a big cause of the indoor air pollution, are harmful if ingested, and are poisonous.  Some of the cleaners that we buy and use are some of the most toxic chemicals found in our homes.  According to the U.S. Poison Control Center Data from 2014, 91% of human exposures occurred at a residence with 11% of the calls for Pediatric Exposure (children 5 and under) were because of a household cleaning supplies.

Cleaning supplies vary in the type of health hazard they pose. Some cause minor issues such as watery eyes or skin irritations.  Others pose a more long lasting problem such as breathing issues or even cancer.

Fragrances added to cleaners, especially laundry soap, make our homes and clothing smell good, but they can be very toxic and cause itchy watery eyes, sneezing, and respiratory irritation. One-third of the substances used in the fragrance industry are toxic according to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.  Since the chemical formulas of the fragrance are considered trade secrets, the companies are not required to reveal the actually chemicals used and just need to list "fragrance" as an ingredient.

Once these chemicals have been washed down the drain they start affecting our environment.  The chemicals are treated along with sewage and other waste water at municipal treatment plants, then discharged into nearby waterways. Most of the ingredients in the chemical cleaners break down during the treatment process or soon after.  However, a lot of them don't! Those that don't affect the fish, streams, and wildlife.

The plastic bottles that these chemicals are packaged in cause another environmental problem.  These bottles are, more often than not, sent to the landfill instead of being recycled. Some of the cleaners are bottled in polyvinyl chloride (PVC, #3). PVC, otherwise known as vinyl, is made from cancer-causing chemicals such as vinyl chloride.  Many recycling centers will not accept this type of container for recycling. This means that less than 1% of all PVC is recycled each year.

I have found a solution for my household and I hope to be able to help others along the way.  I was introduced to Norwex.  They are a company that is dedicated to drastically reducing the amount of chemicals that families use in their safe havens.  They offer safe cleaning solutions for the entire house!  You can ditch the chemicals and learn to clean with just WATER! Right?  When I received my kit and started watching the training videos I was amazed! Then I used the products and fell in LOVE!!

I would really enjoy talking to you and your family and friends about the benefits of Norwex. Please join me on Facebook.
